The senior citizen has been charged with possession of a significant amount of narcotics and illegal cultivation of cannabis.

Local police in Krosno had been investigating the case for several months, focusing on illegal drug production and possession. “Our officers identified suspects involved in this activity and worked to pinpoint their locations and possible distribution channels,” explained police spokesperson, Paweł Buczyński. Their suspicions led them to a private residence, where the discovery was made.

“The investigation was confirmed during a search of the property, where approximately 1.2 kilograms of marijuana were secured, along with seven cannabis plants,” Buczyński reported.

The elderly suspect was taken into custody, questioned, and charged with the unlawful cultivation of cannabis and possession of a large quantity of illegal substances. If convicted, he could face a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Cannabis laws in Poland

Cannabis laws in Poland are no laughing matter. While the use of medical marijuana has been legal since 2017, recreational use is still strictly prohibited. Cultivating cannabis plants or possessing larger quantities of marijuana can lead to hefty fines or long prison sentences—just like the 71-year-old in Krosno is now facing.

Even though discussions about cannabis legalization continue to pop up in Polish media and politics, the country remains conservative when it comes to marijuana use compared to some of its European neighbors like the Netherlands or Germany.
