Thornton Law Firm is investigating multiple reports of individuals across the country who suffered serious liver damage as a result of taking 1906 Midnight edibles, a CBD-infused herbal sleeping pill. Regulators in Colorado and Massachusetts have recently notified consumers that one of the active ingredients in 1906 Midnight drops, a Chinese herb called Corydalis, has the potential to cause liver damage and has sent numerous people to the hospital with severely elevated enzyme levels.
In July 2022, The Colorado Department of Revenue’s (DOR) Marijuana Enforcement Division (MED) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) notified all users of 1906 Midnight edibles of “multiple reports of adverse health effects” involving the liver related to the consumption of the product and that Corydalis has the “potential for hepatotoxicity (injury to the liver), especially for tetrahydropalmatine (THP), an active ingredient in Corydalis extract.”
Subsequently in August 2022, the Massachusetts Cannabis Commission opened an investigation into 1906 Midnight edibles, notifying consumers that “Corydalis has been associated with an elevated risk of liver injury, a.k.a., hepotoxicity, and may pose a risk to Massachusetts residents’ public health, safety, and welfare. As a result, the Commission is currently investigating this ingredient, including one if its alkaloids, tetrahydropalmatine (THP).”
Individuals across the country have reported frightening and severe side effects after taking 1906 Midnight Edibles, including elevated ALT/AST liver enzyme levels thousands of times higher than normal; extreme fatigue; nausea; hepatitis; abdominal pain; and liver fibrosis; many of which resulted in lengthy and expensive hospitalizations requiring batteries of blood work, MRIs, CAT scans and other procedures.
From 2019 until March 2022, when Corydalis was removed from its Midnight pills, 1906 never put a warning on bottles of its 1906 Midnight drops about any side effects relating to Corydalis, which has long been known to be associated with potential harm to the liver.
