The police appear almost sanguine about the entire incident…

A friendly gathering at an Indiana residence Saturday night took a strange turn and ended with one person shot and another in police custody.

It might have been the acid, authorities confirmed.

Evansville police confirmed one person was shot following a reported break-in, but what actually happened appears to be far more complex, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

Sgt. Nick Winsett, spokesman for the Evansville police, told the newspaper that the shooting occurred when a person at the gathering became violent and another person fired a gun at him, in self-defense, but accidentally struck a third person in the leg.

Evansville Police Sgt. Jeff Kingery told the newspaper that those gathered at the Loft Cove Road residence had been taking the hallucinogenic drug LSD.

“They were all friends, and they were hanging out and doing acid together,” Kingery said. “They all started tripping. At some point, a gun came out, and somebody got shot in the leg.”

Investigators eventually determined that at some point during the gathering, the suspect became combative, attacked the future shooting victim and struck him several times. A third person then fired on the suspect but accidentally struck the victim in the leg, WFIE reported.

Fearing for their lives, the friends managed to get the suspect outside the apartment, locked the doors and called police, but the suspect repeatedly attempted to regain entry to the residence.

When a responding officer later went back to his police cruiser to retrieve medical supplies for the shooting victim, the suspect “confronted the officer” while acting erratically and “punched the officer in the face,” WFIE reported.

Winsett told the Courier & Press that the officer was able to deploy his stun gun against the suspect and incapacitate him until other officers placed him under arrest. The suspect, who continued to act erratically, was eventually transported to an area hospital for medical treatment.

The shooting victim, who is expected to recover fully, has no intention of filing charges against the friend who accidentally shot him in the leg, Winsett told the newspaper.
