Everybody in the know will know how much we owe her.
We’d suggest, as much as we owe her husband
Here’s a rather lovely obituary via linked in from..
Ann’s husband Alexander Theodore “Sasha” Shulgin (who died of cancer in 2014) was the Godfather of Psychedelics. ‘Sasha was a chemist who specialized in the creation of and experimentation with mind-altering substances, and who introduced the controversial drug popularly known as Ecstasy for potential therapeutic use.’
Dr. Shulgin and his 2nd wife Ann – ‘experimented on themselves and their friends, and published their results of over 200 chemical compounds – capable of rejiggering (to change or rearrange in a new or different way, especially by the use of techniques not always considered ethical) the quotidian (the little things in life/perspective of everyday stress and coping) functions.’
**Yes, I had to look up those words**
Ann and Alex ‘co-founded Transform Press in 1991 sharing their passion and commitment to the uncensored examination of psychoactive compounds. They co-authored and published PiHKAL: A Chemical Love Story (1991) and TiHKAL: The Continuation (1997), the two cult classics based on their psychedelic experiences. The publications generated regular discussion groups on psychedelics and psychopharmacology which the Shulgins led together for many years. They also contributed jointly to several other publications including, The Secret Chief, The Secret Chief Revealed, Entheogens and the Future of Religion, and Ecstasy: The Complete Guide.’
Ann was a trained Jungian Lay Therapist who helped facilitate the use of MDMA and 2CB in therapeutic settings while those substances were still legal.
They were most interested in ‘the integration of the Shadow and an overarching theme of spirituality and unification with the divine in all things.’
These psychedelic giants are now gone. Hopefully we will learn from their experiments, and utilize their teaching to heal our world. May their theoretical constructs for humanity continue – as we continue to explore the mind-body connection.
