Australia: Cannabis inquiry to visit regional Victoria

The Mandarin reports….

An inquiry into the use of cannabis in Victoria will be heard at the George Kerferd Hotel in Beechworth this week.

The town of Beechworth in North East Victoria will play host to a regional hearing into the use of cannabis on Wednesday.

Local residents are being invited to share testimony about their lived experiences of cannabis use or watch proceedings from the public gallery.

Committee Chair Fiona Patten said data showing cannabis use among people living in regional Victoria meant it was important to get community opinion on the best way to manage it.

“The work of the Parliament is about reflecting and representing the community and the committee process is one of the very significant ways we do this,” Ms Patten said.

The hearing is set to hear from representatives from the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Centre Wangaratta and Odyssey House Victoria. Representatives from local drug and alcohol support organisation Gateway Health will also give evidence.

Community witnesses will be heard from 1pm after the program of official guests have delivered their testimony.

The cannabis use inquiry hearing will occur at the same time as the Victorian Upper House sitting in the regional town of Bright.

The inquiry is one of three senate committee hearings scheduled to occur in regional Victoria to coincide with the Legislative Council’s first regional sitting in nine years.
