Australia:The Medical Research Future Fund Announces $AUS3 Million In The Kitty For Cannabis Research

In the lead up to Australia’s  Women’s Health Week (7-11 September 2020) and the MRFF (Medical Research Future Fund) grants have been announced.

First up.. for non Australians here’s a bit of background

The Medical Research Future Fund

The Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) is a $20 billion long-term investment supporting Australian health and medical research. The MRFF aims to transform health and medical research and innovation to improve lives, build the economy and contribute to health system sustainability.

Here are the grants that have been announced

  • $5 million over five years to the National Women’s Health Research, Translation and Impact Network, for research with strong potential to improve health outcomes for women and girls
  • $5 million over four years to the Australian Clinical Trials Alliance to be a national partner providing specialised leadership and support to both investigator-led and industry clinical trials, and to Clinical Quality Registries
  • more than $6.9 million to five projects to improve primary health care in the areas of contraception and abortion for rural women, health care for people in aged care, diabetes in Indigenous Australians, nutrition and heart disease, and the health of urban Indigenous people (details below).

Why are we telling you this….. because the Australian Minister for Health Greg Hunt  also says

The Hon Greg Hunt MP Minister for Health

In addition to these grants, I am today announcing new grant opportunities worth more than $86.5 million, for clinical trials and other vital research. Clinical trials grant opportunities totalling $77.2 million will provide up to…

One of the grants will total $AUS3 Million and will be

$3 million for clinical trials to examine the benefits of medicinal cannabis for managing pain, symptoms and side effects for cancer patients

We can, I imagine, be assured that some undeserving university department full of forelock tuggers or / and a politically well connected listed cannabis company whose shares will feature on the portfolios of various liberal front and back benchers will be the ones to access these funds.

It is unfortunately somewhat of a foregone conclusion that this will be the case.

If you want to get your hands on the cash… this is probably the best place to start if you can’t afford to spend your investors hard earned dollars on an overpriced Australian lawyer.
