Bavaria’s health minister calls for cannabis model regions to be canceled
09/18/2024 | Bavaria’s Health Minister Judith Gerlach (CSU) has called on the federal government to abandon the planned cannabis model regions, according to the Deutsche Apotheker Zeitung. These are intended as the “second pillar” of cannabis legalization and should enable the sale of cannabis without a prescription in pharmacies or licensed specialist stores in certain regions.
Gerlach refers to a legal opinion that would confirm the incompatibility of such commercial structures with European and international law. She also refers to alleged doubts within the SPD regarding the feasibility of this.
Several German cities, including most recently Wiesbaden, had expressed interest in participating as a model region. The Federal Ministry of Health has so far been unable to provide a timetable for the approval of the model regions and referred to EU legal hurdles.
