Here’s the short official statement..

Last week, Bureau of Cannabis Control Chief Lori Ajax announced her retirement after nearly 27 years of state service. After spending 21 years at the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control, Ajax was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as Chief of what would become the Bureau of Cannabis Control in February of 2016, and retained by Governor Newsom when he took office in 2019. Her last day will be Wednesday, December 2, 2020.
“Lori Ajax rose to an immense challenge over the past four and a half years, leading the creation of a regulatory structure for cannabis in the world’s largest legal cannabis market,” said Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency Secretary Lourdes Castro Ramírez. “During her time as Chief, her leadership and skill have earned the respect of local governments, law enforcement, and the cannabis industry. Thanks to her efforts, California is now a model for other states and nations as they begin to legalize cannabis.”

To ensure continuity, Assistant Chief Counsel Tamara Colson has been appointed to serve as Acting Bureau Chief beginning December 3, 2020. Colson has served as Assistant Chief Counsel for the Bureau of Cannabis Control since May of 2016. Her knowledge of cannabis issues and experience with the Bureau will be extremely helpful as California continues to move forward with planning the consolidation of the three cannabis licensing authorities into one department under the Business, Consumer Services, and Housing Agency.
