California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones is continuing to urge insurers to cover the state’s cannabis industry amid reports that President Donald Trump’s administration will not crack down on states allowing the use of marijuana.

More than 24 surplus lines insurers and the first admitted insurer are now offering insurance for various risks faced by the cannabis businesses in California, the department said in a statement Tuesday.

Mr. Jones sent a letter to the insurance industry last week after Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colorado, released a statement saying that the Trump administration has committed to respect the rights of Colorado and other states to allow for the legal use of marijuana. Mr. Gardner sought the commitment after Attorney General Jeff Sessions rescinded the Cole Memorandum, an Obama-era policy that took a “hands-off” approach to enforcing federal laws prohibiting marijuana use.

CLEARLAKE, Calif. – Officials in the city of Clearlake are urging community members who are planning to grow marijuana to get the required permit.

Under the Personal Marijuana Cultivation Ordinance No. 197-2017, a permit through the city is required to legally cultivate marijuana for personal use outdoors within the city limits.

Permit applications are available at City Hall and are downloadable from the city’s Web site.

Residents have until April 30 to submit the application to City Hall in order to legally cultivate marijuana for personal use. There also is a $250 registration fee required to help offset the city’s cost to administer the program.

Selling marijuana cultivated for personal use is illegal and commercial cannabis cultivation requires additional state and local permits.

SANTA CRUZ >> Anxiously anticipated rules to license commercial cannabis cultivation and production in unincorporated Santa Cruz County are moving forward after a landmark vote.

On Tuesday, county officials unanimously signed off on two proposed ordinances to license the local pot producers to step into the new commercial market. Now approved in concept, the rules are on track to be adopted at the board’s May 8 meeting before they would take effect June 8.

The vote came as a relief to many in the local cannabis industry whose temporary state licenses that allow them to legally operate are soon to expire.
