The Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General has a broad mandate to deliver diverse services to British Columbians. The ministry is responsible for policing and law enforcement; correctional services; restorative justice; crime prevention; victims services; coroner services; civil forfeiture; criminal record checks; private security industry regulation; cannabis legalization and regulation; liquor policy, liquor and cannabis licensing; road safety; emergency management, including planning, preparedness, mitigation/prevention, response and recovery; flood protection and mitigation; fire prevention and safety; consumer protection; and guide dog and service dog certification. The ministry also works closely with and has oversight of the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) on auto insurance, driver licensing and vehicle registration.

Reporting directly to the Deputy Minister, the Assistant Deputy Minister, Cannabis, Consumer Protection, and Corporate Policy recommends and implements government policies and manages the ministry’s legislation program, plans strategies and provides leadership within the organization. The Assistant Deputy Minister, Cannabis, Consumer Protection, and Corporate Policy is responsible for the Corporate Policy and Planning Office and the Cannabis Secretariat. This role requires leadership in the development and implementation of government’s consumer protection priorities including leading engagement with various business and consumer stakeholders. The role is also responsible for leading implementation of provincial cannabis policy that balances public health, safety and economic development objectives. This strategic role oversees all matters related to government’s cannabis policing, including the development, implementation, and maintenance of the legislative framework and legal administration of non-medical cannabis in British Columbia. The Assistant Deputy Minister, Cannabis, Consumer Protection, and Corporate Policy will often be the ministry and government spokesperson and lead in a variety of national and provincial stakeholder settings including liaison with federal, municipal, and Indigenous leaders and groups.

The ideal candidate is a seasoned executive with experience in a large policy and legislative-focused public-sector organization. This role requires strategic orientation to manage high profile and complex issues and possess the acumen necessary to build and manage stakeholder relationships and balance interests with integrity. Success in this position requires significant understanding of the structures, processes and practices of government as well as a demonstrated ability to work effectively with Ministers and executives within ministries, and across government.
