Cannabis Industry In Uruguay: Measures To “Boost and Incentivize”

Written by: Adrián A. Gutiérrez

On 8/6/2020, two Decrees were published expressing the intention already stated repeatedly by the Uruguayan Government to promote the production, industrialization, and commercialization of psychoactive and non-psychoactive cannabis, for medical and industrial use.

More specifically, these Decrees state that it is appropriate “to strengthen and incentivize medical psychoactive cannabis industry due to its national and international growth potential”; including, also, other Cannabis industries and products such as food supplements, food, beverages, cosmetics, hygiene products, pharmaceutical supplies, and cannabis as a raw material.

With such Decrees, 2018-2020 commercialization and export procedures for psychoactive and non-psychoactive cannabis are going to be streamlined.

By issuing these types of policies, investors now have clear signals of the government’s aid for cannabis production, industrialization, and commercialization.
