In 2023, Australia’s medical cannabis market reached new heights with the importation of over 42 tonnes of cannabis, marking a 69% increase compared to the previous year. This surge in imports is a clear indication of the country’s growing demand for cannabis products, driven by an expanding patient base and evolving product preferences.
Canada continues to dominate as the top supplier, with exports to Australia soaring by 60% to 34 tonnes. Other countries, including South Africa, Denmark, and Portugal, have also significantly increased their exports to Australia, reflecting the global interest in tapping into this lucrative market. Interestingly, new entrants like Uruguay and Thailand have begun exporting to Australia, albeit in smaller volumes. This diversification of supply sources suggests that Australia is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for global cannabis producers.
