Celebrities Involved in the Cannabis Industry

Ever since cannabis became somewhat legal in the US, more and more celebrities decided to not only come forward about their enjoyment of it but have also launched their own lines of cannabis-related products.

Some even went a step further and founded their own companies. And even though their businesses might not be among the best seed banks ever, they are still pretty popular and generate a rather nice income.

Who are those people exactly? Well, that’s what you’re about to find out. Here are some of the most popular celebrities that have started their own cannabis business or entered the cannabis market through partnerships.

Snoop Dogg

“So what if I’m smokin’ weed onstage and doing what I gotta do? It’s not me shooting nobody, stabbing nobody, killing nobody. It’s a peaceful gesture and they have to respect that and appreciate that.” Do you recognize those words? They were uttered by no other than the king of cannabis himself – Snoop Dogg.

There’s probably no better example of a celebrity involved with cannabis than him – we could even go as far as saying that he’s the OG. Even back in the day, when smoking weed was seen by many as a crime, he was more often seen with a blunt in hand than without it.

It turns out he decided to turn his hobby into a business. Once marijuana was legalized in Colorado in 2015, he didn’t waste any time and co-founded “Leafs by Snoop” which up till this date is extremely popular, not only among his fans.

Wiz Khalifa

Cameron Jibril Thomas, or as he is better known, Wiz Khalifa, is an American rapper, actor, and songwriter. Aside from being one of the most popular musicians of the rap genre, he is often recognized for his close relation to the cannabis world.

Ever since the ’90s, Khalifa didn’t hide his opinion about cannabis use. Just take a look at his mixtapes and albums – “Rolling papers,” “Kush and Orange Juice,” or “Medicated” are only a few examples. He has a history with brands associated with cannabis:

  • In 2014, the rapper launched his line of rolling products with RAW, which was at the time one of the main rolling paper brands. As Khalifa himself said about the collaboration – “I’ve been using the product for years, and it only felt right to make this happen with them.”
  • In 2015, he announced that he would be founding Khalifa Kush Enterprise – his own cannabis strain brand.
  • In 2016, the rapper partnered up with RiverRock Cannabis to produce an exclusive line of cannabis products. The line included infused products, Khalifa-curated strains, as well as concentrates.
  • In 2017, precisely on the 20th of April, Wiz Khalifa launched a game called “Wiz Khalifa’s Weed Farm” – it’s a simulation where players can learn how to grow and harvest cannabis.
  • In 2018, Khalifa associated himself with Supreme Cannabis, thanks to which his Khalifa Kush Strain became available to the Canadian customers.

Whoopi Goldberg

Whoopi Goldberg is an American singer, comedian, and actress who has won several awards, including Tony, Grammy, and Academy Awards.

In 2016, she partnered up with Maya Elisabeth, who has been in the cannabis industry for a while (Maya is the owner of Om Edibles – an all-female owned cannabis consumables company). Together, they launched Whoopi & Maya, which specialized in cannabis-infused topicals that help with menstrual pain. Their company was probably one of the first ones to approach cannabis from a female perspective.

As she said in one of her interviews – “I asked a friend in the cannabis industry if anyone was doing marijuana for menstrual cramps; and when he said no, I knew someone had to – and that it may as well be us.” Unfortunately, despite its initial popularity among women, in February of 2020 the company had to close down.

The Bottom Line

Not so long ago, a celebrity had only two options when it comes to cannabis – either smoke in private, without letting other people know about it, or smoke publicly (and often heavily) to show their disagreement with the marijuana laws. However, today that’s not a problem anymore due to the fact that cannabis is legal in the majority of the states – even if it’s just for medical use.

Now, celebrities not only publicly admit that they like to smoke every once in a while, but even start their own businesses related to cannabis. The ones we mentioned above are just a small portion. Martha Stewart, Tommy Chong, Willie Nelson, Cheech Marin, Dick Wolf, Seth Rogen, Montel Williams, Jay Z… the list could go on and on, and that’s not mentioning those who haven’t started yet but have plans to do so.

It’s safe to say that celebrities are becoming a huge part of the cannabis industry. For how long? That’s something only time will tell.
