Here’s their Methodology notes

General Comments

The Arrest Explorer page provides detailed information regarding the number of persons arrested, as reported by law enforcement agencies to the FBI’S UCR Program. The user can select the offense, the locality (national, state, or local agency), and are able to select a custom time frame or preset periods of time. This page represent data from the SRS and summarized NIBRS.

Because a person may be arrested multiple times during a year, the UCR arrest figures do not reflect the total number of individuals who have been arrested; rather, the arrest data show the number of times that persons have been arrested, as reported by law enforcement agencies to the UCR Program.

Locality Selection – National, State, Agency

The first chart displays the rate per 100,000 people and the percent of population covered by month for the nation. Rate is displayed as a trend per 100,000 and the percent of population covered. The percent of population covered is the population represented by the participating law enforcement agencies reporting data to the FBI’S UCR Program in comparison to the nation’s total population for that month.

The Arrest Offense Counts section provides counts of arrest data reported to the FBI’S UCR Program. Arrest data counts are displayed per offense. All reported arrest data for offenses are presented. Additionally, arrest counts also displayed in visualizations depicting crimes against persons, crimes against property, and crimes against society. Further counts are displayed for arrest data reported to the FBI’S UCR Program, including drug, prostitution, and gambling offenses.

The charts located in the Arrest Offense Counts area display all arrests by offense (with no breakdowns) gambling arrests with breakdowns, drug sales and possession arrests with breakdowns, and prostitution arrests with breakdowns. Additional charts include arrest for crimes against property, crimes against society, and crimes against persons.

Demographic information for arrestees, as reported to the FBI’S UCR Program, are also available. Information by age, sex, and race are provided. By choosing a specific offense, the charts are updated to reflect the demographic information specific to that offense.
