Fiona Patten has called for the industry’s support as she bids to become the first Legalise Cannabis MP elected to the federal parliament.

The former Reason Party leader and current deputy chair of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association (AMCA) has written to potential supporters outlining her plans to advocate for the sector if she wins a Senate seat.

Patten, who lost her seat in the Victorian state parliament in 2022, said she had “unfinished business” and a desire to use her experience of working across the political divide to achieve further policy reform.

She said: “When I left the Victorian parliament in 2022, we’d successfully secured many of the policies that we ran with when I entered eight years earlier.

“But I did have a sense of unfinished business around it all. After initiating many reforms, including for cannabis, it was disappointing not to be able to follow through with them.
