The New Zealand government is currently looking to hire a cannabis expert that has “proven experience” ahead of the non-binding referendum for a legal cannabis market that will take place next year.

In the first weeks of May, Andrew Little, the Justice Minister of New Zealand, announced that the people will have to vote if they want to decriminalize cannabis, but he added that there will be strict restrictions, which includes rules for home-grown cannabis, special bars for consumption, and special outlets for the sale of cannabis.

Justice Minister Little added, “Cabinet has agreed there will be a simple Yes/No question on the basis of a draft piece of legislation.”

The Policy Group is recruiting for an experienced Policy Manager (fixed-term for 1 year) for the Cannabis Policy Team.

About the teams and the roles The Policy Manager will report to the General Manager Criminal Justice.

The Cannabis Policy Team has been tasked with preparing draft legislation that will form the basis of the referendum question at the 2020 General Election. Key elements of this will include:

  • Overseeing the development of policy advice to Cabinet on the regulatory design of the system
  • Working with Parliamentary Counsel Office on the drafting of the draft legislation
  • Managing the interface with the team leading on the election and referendum policy work and other key stakeholders, including the Ministries of Health, Foreign Affairs, Primary Industries and the State Services Commission
  • Overseeing the development of explanatory material to assist the public to make an informed choice, including a role in responding to requests from the public, media and other stakeholders.

  • You will be a proven problem solver and have the confidence to work with complexity and ambiguity.

  • You will have a relevant qualification at bachelor’s level or higher.
