La Honda Winery Launches New “Merry Pranksters” Wine & Becomes Climate Neutral Certified

Not often we will  repeat a wine press release verbatim but as it’s dedicated to the late great Ken Kesey how could we not. We hope they have all the right permissions to use his name and unfortunately it appears the wine isn’t laced with copious amounts of LSD like the Kool Aid at the Dead Acid Test so faithfully recorded in Wolfe’s “Electric Kool Aid Acid Test”

The Press Release

May 5th – “The Merry Pranksters were the spark behind the 60’s. Ken Kesey, the author of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’, was the leader of the pack, a famed band of wild and fun trouble-makers who marauded around the country on a psychedelically-painted bus. Their ‘radical self-expression’ set the tone for the cultural liberation that breathed a mischievous awakening from convention into America and the world” says David Page, owner of La Honda Winery.

The wines are a fun and tasty tribute to the Merry Pranksters whose home was in the town of La Honda in the hills above San Francisco Bay, where we grow the grapes:

“In 1964 the Merry Pranksters jumped on a bus loaded with LSD and lit the fuse for the 60’s. Immortalized in “The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test”, the Pranksters’ wild journeys were punctuated by brushes with the law and endless parties.

Their psychedelic ethos was to embrace love, express yourself, and break some damned rules. Ideal inspiration for a wine. Particularly as we hand-farm small vineyards in their idyllic home town of La Honda and the surrounding San Francisco Bay hillsides.

We just adore making, drinking, and sharing our wine. While making mischief. So please…. Drink Well. Be merry. Prank someone.”

Our first release is a 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon. Charlie Miller, the winemaker, says “Showcasing the best mountain grapes, a fabulously fruity wine with light tannins. Picked in the early morning fog, fermentation started spontaneously in open-top tanks. 6 months in oak and 1 month in stainless steel. Bottled unfined & unfiltered. Strawberry and black cherry aromas, blackcurrant and blueberry flavors. Deliciously perfect for pranks.”

Climate Neutral Certified

San Francisco, California – In response to the urgency of the climate crisis, La Honda Winery is proud to announce that it is officially Climate Neutral Certified. La Honda joins thousands of other brands that have earned the standard by measuring and offsetting all of their 2020 carbon emissions and reducing future emissions.

Climate Neutral Certified is the leading consumer label designating carbon neutrality. It is carried by brands that have voluntarily stepped up to take responsibility for the greenhouse gas emissions generated in the production, operations, and shipping of their goods and services.

“La Honda Winery is proud to start to measure and help unravel the damage we’re all doing to future generations’ increasingly dire prospects of maintaining even close to the same standards of living and environment that we’ve enjoyed without making significant adjustments for too long.” says David Page, owner of La Honda.

“La Honda Winery and our other Climate Neutral Certified brands are leading the global shift to a net-zero economy by doing what all companies should be doing immediately: measuring, offsetting, and reducing their carbon emissions,” says Climate Neutral CEO, Austin Whitman. “Our label helps consumers identify these brands. It’s a recognizable and trusted symbol that turns everyday purchases into meaningfully positive climate action.”

Climate Neutral’s certification is based on internationally recognized standards for carbon measurement, neutrality, and offsetting. Each brand must measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 cradle-to-customer greenhouse gas emissions for the prior calendar year. Then a brand must buy verified carbon credits to offset its entire footprint. This directs investment into critical carbon sequestration projects such as forest conservation, renewable energy, and carbon capture technologies. Finally, brands commit to a reduction action plan to cut future emissions within a 12-24 month timeline, reporting progress on those plans annually. The process is repeated annually when companies must re-certify.
