Here’s the story as reported in Biz Journals.com

Maryland law firm Offit Kurman, which has offices in Bethesda and Baltimore, formed an exclusive alliance with Denver-based Adherence Compliance to offer automated compliance software and services for the cannabis industry, it announced Friday.

The technology conducts audits and provides quantitative risk assessment applications and consulting services for companies in states that have legalized marijuana for medical or recreational purposes.

“Regulatory compliance is the key to long-term operational success in this industry,” said Darren Weiss, a cannabis attorney with Offit Kurman and co-founder of the firm’s cannabis practice. Offit Kurman called it the first instance of a national cannabis compliance practice backed by a full-service business law firm.

Founded by Jonathan R. Wachs, chairman of the firm’s Intellectual Property Group and manager of New Paradigm Counsel, the cannabis practice group has eight attorneys specializing in the field. The firm offers business plan development, financing and banking, labor and employment compliance, policy development and general counsel work.

Extra compliance help could be an important asset in Maryland after a state commission offered preliminary approvals for 15 grower and 15 processor licenses earlier this week from 141 grower and 124 processors applications.
