Massachusetts: City Of Worcester commission looks at decriminalizing psychedelics, although vote won’t change state law

Worcester Human Rights Commission held a meeting earlier this month petitioning for the decriminalization of entheogenic plants and fungi- natural psychedelics.

Worcester is only the latest in a group of Massachusetts cities that have taken up the issue.

The city councils of Easthampton, Northampton, Cambridge and Somerville have already voted to decriminalize the possession and use of psychedelic plants, according to WBUR.

While their votes don’t change state law, the city councils’ decisions make it the lowest priority for police officers to enforce laws related to entheogenic plants or advise that no city official should use public resources to enforce the laws.

In 2020, Oregon became the first state to legalize psilocybin for mental health treatment and the District of Columbia decriminalized the use of magic mushrooms and other psychedelic substances.

At the Human Rights Commission meeting, Slatkin discussed how psychedelics like psilocybin mushrooms, Ayahuasca, and Ibogaine can be used to help individuals struggling with substance abuse.

The psychedelics help with withdrawal symptoms and break the mental and behavioral patterns that develop overtime with substance abuse, Slatkin, who has experience working as a research technician at an addiction lab in UMass Medical School, said.
