Drug charges have been laid at two FunGuyz magic mushroom store locations in Waterloo Region after police completed search warrants over the weekend.
The searches were completed at both chains, one located in the area of Victoria Street South and Park Street in Kitchener, and the other near King Street East and Waterloo Street North in Cambridge.
Police did not initially name either business, but both have been searched and charged multiple times in the past, including on Wednesday.
Investigators on scene seized a large quantity of psilocybin, also known as magic mushrooms, in various forms and Canadian currency.
A 23-year-old male and a 32-year-old female, both from Cambridge, were arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking.
“The Waterloo Regional Police Service wishes to emphasize to the public that the sale (trafficking) of psilocybin is a criminal offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), as psilocybin is categorized as a Schedule III controlled substance,” police said in a statement on Sunday.
“Businesses engaged in selling these products are operating unlawfully, and the substances they offer are neither regulated nor subject to standardized quality control measures.”
Both parties are scheduled to appear in court in May 2024
