Rabat – Security and customs officers at the Beni Ansar maritime port in Nador foiled an attempt to smuggle 53,400 ecstasy pills on Wednesday morning.
The operation led to the arrest of two men, aged 20 and 30, suspected of links to an international drug trafficking network.
A security source stated that officers stopped the first suspect as he arrived on a maritime shuttle from a European country.
A search of his vehicle revealed thousands of psychotropic pills hidden inside. The discovery prompted an immediate investigation to determine the extent of the operation and identify others involved.
Authorities quickly tracked down a second suspect, who was thought to have participated in the trafficking effort. Police nabbed him at the same port as part of a subsequent security raid. The two suspects were placed in custody for further investigation.
