Portland, OR – The Oregon Liquor and Cannabis Commission (OLCC) is currently conducting an administrative investigation into a fatal incident that took place at La Mota, a licensed cannabis retailer located in the St. Johns neighborhood of North Portland. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office has charged Jason Steiner with two counts of second-degree murder and attempted murder based on the incident. Mr. Steiner has pled not guilty.
On Thursday, October 3, 2024, two individuals were fatally shot during an attempted robbery at La Mota, 9440 N. Saint Louis Avenue, Portland.
The business is owned by LaMota North Portland LLC, with Aaron Mitchell and Rosa Cazares listed as members of the LLC.
OLCC is investigating possible administrative violations related to the incident.
The business has been licensed since November 2020. Steiner has had a valid worker permit since May 9, 2023. Neither this licensed premises, nor Steiner, have previous violations issued by the OLCC. The licensee has reported four previous robberies to the Commission at this location.
The business has reported to OLCC they are currently closed and do not have an anticipated re-opening date.
The OLCC is responsible for regulating the sale and distribution of cannabis in Oregon and takes such incidents seriously to ensure compliance with safety and legal standards.
