Portugal: Two arrested as one tonne of hashish seized in Ria Formosa

Portugal resident reports

A major drug bust saw two people arrested and one tonne of hashish confiscated in the Ria Formosa estuary near Cabanas de Tavira in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The operation was carried out by the GNR’s Coastal Control Unit (UCC) in Vila Real de Santo António, which detected the “suspicious movements” of a recreational boat near the Tavira breakwater.

The police force reports that the boat headed towards the estuary, where a smaller boat was used to carry nine bales of hashish onto shore.

“GNR agents were dispatched to the presumed unloading area, where they were able to intercept the drugs and arrest two men, aged 36 and 39, red-handed,” a police statement read.

The other boat, which was unmanned at the time, had another 22 bales onboard which were also seized.

The two men were due to appear before a court while PJ criminal police have taken over the investigation.
