A man will face court today after he was allegedly found in possession of $18 million worth of drugs in the doors of his car in southern New South Wales.
On Tuesday morning, Riverina Police highway patrol officers and members of the state’s crime squad stopped a car travelling south on the Hume Highway, near Gundagai.
Officers searched the car and allegedly found 25 kilograms of methylamphetamine and 10 kilograms of cocaine inside the door cavities of the hatchback.
NSW Police Organised Crime Squad Detective Superintendent Peter Faux said the bust was significant.
“These people think they can move these drugs in large quantities around the country and up and down our roads, but it’s not as simple as they think,” he said.
“We’ve essentially prevented literally hundreds of thousands of people administering drugs through this one seizure.”
Some of the cocaine bricks appeared to have a photo of Russian President Vladimir Putin on them.
Superintendent Faux said identifiable markers were common among dealers to identify or brand their products.
“People want to be distinguished in terms of their drug or their commodity,” he said.
“They could be anything, pictures of vehicles, emblems, and in this case it’s a picture of the Russian president.”
