Separate cannabis extraction explosions send four, including two young children, to hospital

Sometimes you have to wonder whether anything sensible goes through some people’s heads…

The Regina Post reports..

A 51-year-old woman in Oregon has been charged with unlawful manufacturing of marijuana extracts after suffering burn injuries during an explosion in an enclosed trailer this week.

Sirena Alice Yotes suffered severe burns on her legs and the trailer sustained major fire damage during the blast at about 10:30 p.m. on Sept. 13, according to a police log released by the Roseburg Police Department.

Police allege that Yotes was extracting weed oil using PVC pipe and bottles of butane in the enclosed space. As butane was denser than the surrounding atmosphere, police believe its fumes settled at the bottom of the trailer and were ignited by the refrigerator pilot light, causing the explosion and fire.

A second blast, this time in California, sparked even more serious injuries, including those to two young children. Again, the fire and explosion last week was inside a trailer where a man was suspected of making butane honey oil.

This week, the City of Ukiah Police Department reported that local police and fire personnel responded to the overnight trailer park at about 6:55 p.m. on Sept. 9.

Upon arriving, first responders saw bystanders helping the man and two young children from inside the trailer. All three “were observed to have significant burns over much of their bodies,” notes the police Facebook post, adding that they were taken by air ambulance to treatment facilities outside the area.

Witnessing numerous items “consistent with materials used in the extraction and manufacture of concentrated cannabis,” investigators with the police department, the Mendocino Major Crimes Task Force and the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority were called in for assistance.

Calling butane “extremely explosive,” The Press Democrat cites the police department’s Lt. Cedric Crook as saying: “When they’re doing it in a closed environment like that anything can ignite the butane… It’s an inherently dangerous situation, even in an open environment.”
