South African’s MedCan import medical cannabis flower into the UK

A South African company has started importing medical cannabis flowers into the UK for the very first time, it has been announced.

MedCan, a GMP certified and fully licensed indoor cannabis cultivation facility in South Africa, have imported a product called Isando, which is a high THC flower containing 16.1% THC, 0.05% CBD and 0.96% CBG.

According to the press release sent to Canex, the flowers have a rich terpene profile, with a very high concentration of the terpene Limonene giving them an intense aroma of citrus and tropical fruit.

The flowers have not been irradiated due to the growing techniques that have been used, therefore the product retains “a lovely smell and intact terpenes.”

Micaël Zollmann, the founder and CEO of MedCan, said: “We are so excited that our product is now available in the UK.

“At MedCan, we are passionate about cultivating a high-quality medical cannabis flower that can be accessed by those who will benefit most.

“Our flower meets the strictest testing requirements, has a rich flavour profile, and will hopefully be well received by the patients and clinicians alike.”

Professor Mike Barnes, Director of Maple Tree Consultants, added: “The UK sees a first of its kind import into the UK from South Africa which is a historic moment for the medical cannabis sector in the UK.

“The UK has an ever-expanding medical cannabis sector which requires good quality products with a secure supply chain.

“We are delighted to support MedCan with this import and are excited to see patients and clinicians have more choice to help with their symptoms.”

The import of medical cannabis products was made easier last year as the Home Office and the Department of Health and Social Care announced an easing of rules. However, the finalisation of Brexit has meant that imports from countries such as the Netherlands have faced uncertainty in recent months.
