Tennessee Republican wishes to permanently block rec cannabis via state’s constitution, the use of which is equated with “rape, human trafficking or prostitution”

The Tennessean reports…

A Republican legislator in Tennessee passed the first hurdle Wednesday in permanently blocking recreational cannabis in the state.

Rep. Brandon Ogles of Franklin received approval in the House criminal justice subcommittee for House Joint Resolution 140, which would amend the state constitution to prohibit future General Assemblies from permitting recreational drug use.

The potential constitutional amendment would also prevent the state legislature from ever legalizing rape, human trafficking or prostitution without making another change to the founding document.

Ahead of the Wednesday meeting, Ogles amended the resolution he initially filed to also include the ban on legalization of recreational use of substances on the federal drug schedules list. The item first only pertained to sex crimes.

“This will ensure we never have recreational drug use in this state,” Ogles told the committee. “I think it very much is an expression of the value system we have in the South in this state.”

Recreational marijuana is not currently legal in the Southeast, though nearby states like Mississippi, Florida, Louisiana, Virginia, West Virginia and Missouri have all allowed medical cannabis.
