The Antigua and Barbuda Cannabis Board has granted a provisional permit to a company to grow cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Yesterday, four representatives of the board that approved the license were invited to the cabinet meeting to inform them of their progress.

The cabinet note said five applications were examined for a license.

The successful company will have to pay a fee of US$325,000 and the government agreed that there will not be any waivers.

Approved Rastafarian groups, will not have to pay the fee, but they will be required to abide by other restrictions in the law.

The cabinet note added that the board requires an injection of funds and seven employees who will be drawn from government departments, since there is a freeze on the government hiring new staff.
