he Minister of Health of Spain, José Manuel Miñones , announced that before the end of May he will present a report that will allow the regulation of the use of medicinal cannabis in the National Health System (SNS) . The news came after some parliamentarians have claimed the delay in the analysis of the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps), whose term ended in 2022.
Miñones also apologized for the delay in his first appearance before the Health Commission of the Lower House. Congress had ruled in favor of regulating medical cannabis in June 2022, and the subcommittee in charge had given Aemps a period of six months to issue recommendations.
What is Spain’s plan for the regulation of medical cannabis
Once the regulation is put in place, drugs containing medical cannabis can be dispensed , which can be obtained in pharmacies under prescription. According to the minister, work is already underway with the pharmaceutical industry on a strategic plan to address this matter, for which he assured that it will be necessary to move forward hand in hand with the rest of the countries of the European Union. From the Spanish presidency of the Council of the European Union they will draw up a list of strategic and priority medicines that allow greater autonomy to be given to the whole of Europe.
What course will Miñones’ management take?
The minister has also promised to facilitate the approval of some of the pending regulations in the sector, from the Equity, Universality and Cohesion Law to the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) law , which are already in the processing phase. Its management will be focused on improving the quality of health care and being able to guarantee faster and more efficient access to medical treatments and services.
