Thousand Oaks’ two medical cannabis dispensaries narrowly cleared the first hurdle Tuesday night in their bid to start selling recreational cannabis.
On a 3-2 vote, the City Council directed staff to write a draft amendment to the city’s existing cannabis ordinance to allow for the sale of recreational cannabis in town. The council will consider it at a future meeting.
“The recreational product is already here,” legally delivered from outside Thousand Oaks, Mayor Bob Engler said in voting for staff to compose a draft amendment. “It is active in our community already.
“So, the question then is: Do we want to have more local control over the dispensing of that product?” he said.
The two medical cannabis dispensaries, Leaf Dispensary and Legendary Organics, are the only cannabis dispensaries in Thousand Oaks. They would be the first to sell recreational cannabis in the city.
