A former Jersey tomato farm is the proposed location for the island’s second medical Cannabis farm facility. Solairo Ltd has confirmed its proposed plans to demolish the current structure on the site and construct a new farm.
Currently, the only medical Cannabis farm on the island was approved in July for a site near Crabbé, in St Mary. Government officials in Jersey have made clear their intention of building their Cannabis operations.
The Economic Development Minister, Senator Lyndon Farnham, attended the Cannabis Europa Expo in June where she revealed plans for the island’s Cannabis industry. The announcement came after the Jersey Evening Post reported that island officials had already begun vetting local companies.
The design statement, which accompanied the application, broke down the construction proposals for the new facility:
“The new agricultural shed will include space for the operational aspects, including growing rooms, a trimming room and packing room, with vault and dispatch area”
The site would also feature staff facilities, such as changing and wash-rooms, and a canteen. All of the proposed facilities would be contained within a 2.4 metre-high fence, topped with barbed wire. All of these features are in compliance with requirements set out by the States of Jersey Police.
Solairo claims that it would be unable to use the existing structure on the site, due to its condition. The former tomato greenhouse is a timber structure, which has experienced significant decay since its abandonment. The design statement claimed that the structure is also “essentially bereft of any glazing.”
Due to the condition of the structure, the application requires permissions to build a new facility. The application claims that the new facility will use energy-efficient LED lighting, and use minimal vehicle movements.
The new growing facility would reportedly only require two members of staff – four during harvesting periods.
