UK: More Details On Labour MP Paul Flynn’s Attempt To Introduce A Private Members Cannabis Bill

It couldn’t be easier. The Tories are distracted by Brexit and whatever Trump throws at them next. All Labour had to do is let Paul Flynn introduce his Bill and politely listen. But no, reefer madness is obviously all the rage on some of the Labour backbenches so they had to do the following…..

And Labour MPs have been accused of turning on one another over the potential legalisation of cannabis in the UK.

Paul Flynn MP waited hours in Parliament on Friday to have the second reading of his cannabis bill heard under the ten minute rule.

However, the private member’s bill which is attempting to have weed legalised for medicinal purposes was blocked by the “filibustering” of his own backbench colleagues, it was claimed.

It was never debated since the bills which came before it were discussed at great length, by his colleague Sandy Martin, Labour MP for Ipswich.

The MP managed to talk about the voting rights of British expatriates for 48 minutes.

Speaking in Parliament on Friday, Mr Flynn said: “What’s happened here today has been a filibuster organised by one party and I’m ashamed to say I’m a member of that party.”

He was rapped over the use of the word filibuster – which is the process of dragging out an issue to avoid a debate or a vote – by deputy speaker Eleanor Laing MP.

Mr Flynn began a protest outside at which colleagues expressed their dismay over what they believe was an intentional blocking of his bill.

Tonia Antoniazzi MP tweeted her anger at her colleagues.

She said: “So disappointed by the filibustering of @PaulFlynnMP ‘s Bill to Legalise MEDICINAL Cannabis. But determined to keep campaigning so people, like young Alfie, don’t have to keep suffering. Hundreds out supporting this life changing treatment. @UPAllianceuk #cannabis.”

Newport West MP Flynn is one of a cross party group of politicians raising the issue of legalisation as parents of sick children battle to treat their kids with cannabis.

This week, Crispin Blunt asked an urgent question over Alfie Dingley who has a rare form of childhood epilepsy (PCDH19) which triggers multiple serious seizures.

In the Netherlands the child was treated with medicinal cannabis and the seizures stopped for more than 20 days.

In the UK, the child’s family was denied the right to use the drug.

Voters watching on were also dismayed at the display by Labour MP Martin.

One person wrote: “I was outraged to see such blatant filibustering on the medicinal marijuana bill, both as a UK citizen and as a parent and carer of a young child who would benefit from said legalisation.”

The cannabis bill will return to the house on July 6.

The Labour Party and Sandy Martin MP have been contacted for comment.
