Union College and The City Of Plainfield To Offer Residents Job Training In The Cannabis Industry

UNION COUNTY, NJ – Union College is offering a five-session virtual training program to train individuals for entry-level jobs in the cannabis industry. This is the third time the NJ Cannabis Certified program will partner with the College and the City of Plainfield. Running live via Zoom on Monday nights, September 12th – October 10th, from 6 to 9 p.m., class registration is also open to the public.

“This historic partnership with the City of Plainfield is really one of a kind,” said Sarah Trent, founder of New Jersey Cannabis Certified and owner of Valley Wellness, a medical dispensary slated to open in Raritan, NJ, in November of this year. “I am not aware of any other municipality that has taken it upon themselves to fund cannabis workforce development training for their residents.”

Tailored to New Jersey’s medical marijuana program and now the new personal use rules and regulations, this 15-hour training covers topics including: cannabis law and regulations, cultivation basics, manufactured products, testing, and what you need to know to work in a dispensary. The series also touches on the history of cannabis, the human body’s endocannabinoid system, cannabis taxonomy and terminology, and how to assist medical marijuana program patients with qualifying conditions.

“It is vital that as the city of Plainfield welcomes new industries that our residents benefit first,” responded Mayor Adrian O. Mapp when asked about the motivation behind the classes. “This means providing the avenue for them to get qualified and prepared to take advantage of the opportunities as they become available. We are a city experiencing a renaissance unlike anything seen in the past five decades; we are committed to lifting our community as we grow and improve. We are grateful to have a partner like Union College in Plainfield.”

Union College continues to identify ways to prepare its students to enter existing and emerging industries by providing relevant programs that prepare them for employment in emerging jobs and industries. This partnership allows the city to offer a limited number of residents the ability to take the program free of charge.

“We are excited to partner with the City of Plainfield and continue our mission to build a trained workforce by preparing students to succeed in New Jersey’s rapidly expanding cannabis industry,” stated Dr. Lisa R. Hiscano, Executive Director of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at Union College.

The cost for the virtual course is $500. Valley Wellness makes available a limited number of tuition waiver vouchers for Veterans. Please note that while students must be at least 18 years old to register for the course, most employers require employees to be 21 and pass a background check.
