We rarely “advertise” press releases that come through our inbox but this small company out of Washington is worth highlighting. They write, “Do You Trust Google, Weedmaps, Leafly Enough to Know Your Recreational or Medical Cannabis Habits?” We certainly don’t.
Washington company launches new Cannabis Business – Quick Search. Find companies safely, anonymously, and without prompting for your device location.

- Google: “When you use our services – for example, do a search on Google, get directions on Maps, or watch a video on YouTube – we collect data…”
- Weedmaps: “We may also share your information with others who perform services on our behalf…”
- Leafly: “We may also use your information to verify your geographic location. We may use your geographic location data to personalize our Service, to recommend content…”
How do they collect so much information, when you haven’t agreed to it
Internet protocols for locating a device such as a phone or tablet via GPS requires the user to be prompted to allow the connection – browser-based locating does not.
Google, Weedmaps, Leafly initially skirt the GPS location prompt by grabbing the public IP address (the unique id of your internet connection point) and then they track you and target ads, content based on the geographic information obtained with that IP address.
Proof? Try navigating Google, Weedmaps, Leafly and see content or businesses listed outside of your current location…it’s very difficult and troubling.
