USA: South Carolina man shoots, kills friend after they both took LSD and friend ‘starting talking crazy,’ solicitor says

An Upstate man shot his friend after the two took LSD, according to Barry Barnette, the 7th Circuit solicitor.

Officials said the shooting happened Saturday morning on Swain Avenue in Boiling Springs.

Barnette described the suspect, James Byrd, and the victim, Kush Jitendra Patel, as “good friends.”

Barnette said the pair purchased 2.5 grams of LSD from someone in Springfield around 10 p.m. Saturday evening.

They split up the grams and ingested the LSD, according to the solicitor.

“Mr. Byrd said Patel was having a bad trip,” when he gave a statement to deputies, according to Barnette.

Officials said Byrd said Patel “started talking crazy” so Byrd armed himself with a firearm.

Byrd told deputies that Patel approached him, and he shot him.

Barnette said the sheriff’s office estimates there were seven entry gunshot wounds and three exit gunshot wounds.

The coroner said Kush Jitendra Patel, 22, of Inman, was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center at 4:13 a.m.

Byrd is charged with murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Bond was denied on the murder charge.
