A mother whose teenage son is disabled by severe epilepsy is begging the NHS to pay for the medical cannabis oil she can no longer afford.
Rachel Rankmore said son Bailey has “no quality of life” since having to come off the oil six weeks ago.
She and husband Craig can no longer afford the £2,000 a month needed to help their son, which they paid for through fundraising. Covid restrictions have made running fund raisers impossible, Rachel said.
Without the oil, imported from Israel and only available on private prescription, Bailey, 19, who lives with his family in Cardiff, is back to having scores of major seizures a day.
There is a risk he might suffocate or be harmed falling over and he cannot ever be left alone.
Bailey is now unable to do much more than sit or sleep 23 hours a day, said Rachel.
When he was taking the oil he was playing, eating, going out and attending Ysgol Y Deri special school in Penarth.
“It’s hell living with epilepsy like this and very cruel to hold funding back for this treatment,” Rachel said.
