ECOFIBRE / ANANDA HEMP ANNOUNCE MEDICINAL CANNABIS UPDATE ON GYNAECOLOGICAL RESEARCH PORTFOLIO

Sydney, Australia 6th Oct 2023 – Ecofibre and its Australian medicinal cannabis subsidiary Ananda Hemp today announced it will present an update on their Women’s Health research program at Parliament House, Sydney on 18th October 2023 from 5:30pm to 7:00pm.  Ecofibre Chief Science Officer Dr Alex Capano and Professor Pradeep Tanwar from University of Newcastle will discuss their research findings on the role cannabinoids can play in treating endometriosis, a significant unmet need affecting many Australian women.

Endometriosis is a debilitating disease with few treatment options.  It affects 1 in 9 women, girls and those assigned female at birth, takes 6.5 years on average to be diagnosed, and is estimated to cost Australian society $9.7 billion annually.  A 2022 Australian survey found 72% of endometriosis sufferers reported using illicit cannabis to manage symptoms. Women using illicit cannabis found it to be effective in the management of pain, mood, sleep, nausea and gastrointestinal upsets.  Only 23.1% of respondents noted they accessed cannabis legally via their doctor.

Dr Capano and Professor Tanwar will share research findings from a landmark trial using world-first uterus avatars known as ‘organoids’ from real endometriosis patients.  Scientists at the University of Newcastle investigated the effect of cannabidiol (CBD), which is the non-intoxicating cannabis compound found in hemp plants, on endometriosis symptoms.  Their findings demonstrated complete elimination of endometriosis lesions in human derived organoids.  The researchers found that CBD not only reduced inflammation and other symptoms but also appeared to significantly reduce lesions associated with endometriosis in the lab setting.

The research breakthrough builds on another US study involving a small group of women which found that using medicinal cannabis led to less pain and symptoms of inflammation in women with pelvic conditions including endometriosis. 92% of patients in the US FREEHER study, an observational Phase IV trial, reported that a CBD cream was helpful after 7 days. 36% of respondents had endometriosis and all reported pelvic pain.

The Ecofibre / Ananda Hemp Medicinal Research Update on October 18 at Parliament House, Sydney is open to all for attendance but is limited to 100 attendees only.  Interested parties can secure attendance through RSVP by email at [email protected].

Dr Capano will also detail these findings to medical professionals at the upcoming Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy & Surgery (AGES) Society Limited ‘Striving to Thrive: Beyond the Pelvis Symposium 2023’ taking place from October 20-21, 2023 at the Sofitel on Collins, Melbourne.
