An urgent product recall notice has been issued by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) for a specific brand of cannabidiol (CBD) oil sold in Ireland – the product is being recalled because of “unsafe levels” of THC.
The levels of Delta‐9‐THC – tetrahydrocannabinol – in the CBD product have been deemed to be in excess of what is acceptable under EU regulations. It is therefore not considered sufficiently safe to be sold on the Irish market.
The specific product being recalled by the FSAI is Irish-made MountainGrown.ie Irish CBD Oil sold in packets of 10ml, 20ml and 30ml.
THC is the psychoactive chemical found in cannabis, and products containing over 0.2 per cent THC cannot be sold throughout the EU according to European law.
CBD is underpinned by the Misuse of Drugs Act, and the FSAI states that some CBD oils and balms are classified as novel foods. A novel food is a food or food ingredient that was not significantly available within the EU market before May 15, 1997.
