USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service to Conduct Hemp Survey

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will send the Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry to 241 Illinois producers on Jan. 22, 2024. This project will measure changes from NASS’s 2022 Hemp Acreage and Production survey. Like the 2022 questionnaire, this year’s survey will collect information on the total planted and harvested area, yield, production, and value of hemp in the United States in 2023.

“The Hemp Production and Disposition Inquiry will provide critical data about the hemp industry to assist producers, regulatory agencies, state governments, processors, and other key industry entities,” said Mark Schleusener, Illinois State Statistician for USDA – NASS.

For the 2022 season, NASS estimated the total value of industrial hemp production in the United States at $238 million, down 71 percent from 2021. Hemp production in the open was valued $212 million, while hemp grown under protection was valued at $26.1 million. Acres of hemp grown in the open were estimated at 28,314 planted and 18,251 harvested. Hemp grown under protection was estimated at 4.58 million square feet. These and other statistics can be found in the 2022 National Hemp Report.

Illinois survey recipients are asked to respond securely online at agcounts.usda.gov, by mail or fax. Those who do not respond by Jan. 31 may be contacted to arrange an interview to complete the survey.
