Mozambique’s National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) arrested, on Saturday, in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, four individuals in possession of 14 kilos of hashish.
According to the SERNIC spokesperson in Cabo Delgado, Sumail Sabila, speaking to reporters, on Wednesday, in the provincial capital, Pemba, the four Mozambicans were caught red-handed in possession of the drugs.
The case, spokesperson said, has already been drawn up and sent to the Attorney General’s Office for further action.
“SERNIC has been investigating the detainees for a month, but the accused have yet to reveal the origin and destination of the drugs. This is the second seizure SERNIC has made this year”, the spokesperson said.
For their turn, the accused deny their involvement and claim that they were unjustly detained.
One of them claimed that he only found himself being detained by SERNIC agents when he was with a friend who had also been detained.
“I simply spoke to the owner of the car and got a lift. I asked for a lift because it was a friend who dropped me off at the garage. I was stopped by SERNIC and when I approached them to find out why they were taking so long to return my friend’s car, I was caught”, he said.
“I’m a mechanic, the guy left it with me, I always repair his car and I gave SERNIC the car owner’s number. I didn’t open the car, I have nothing to do with drug trafficking. I’m here for the first time in my life”, he added.
