Iboga Retreats in Costa Rica Go Deeper Underground After Woman’s Death

The iboga retreat industry is facing heightened scrutiny after multiple deaths, including the recent one at Soul Centro, have come to light.

Psychedelic retreats in Costa Rica are facing increased scrutiny from the media and government authorities after the recent death of a 40-year-old American woman. According to local news outlet CR Hoy, the woman died from a cardiac arrest on August 5 while receiving treatment at Soul Centro, an iboga retreat center in the city of Puntarenas. A front-page story in the country’s leading newspaper La Nación reports that authorities are investigating the death while also examining the legal gray area that has allowed many ayahuasca, iboga, and ibogaine retreats to operate in Costa Rica.

“Ecstatic Integration,” a newsletter by Costa Rica-based journalist Jules Evans, also notes that most psychedelic retreats in the country are run by foreigners. “The focus of the country’s biggest newspaper on Costa Rica’s entirely-gringo-managed psychedelic retreat industry will be deeply unwelcome for the secretive industry,” Evans wrote.
