A 23-year-old New Jersey woman tried to smuggle nearly 25 pound of marijuana in Christmas wrapping paper on a Spirit Airlines flight last week to the U.S. Virgin Islands, federal officials said.
A K-9 signaled to Customs and Border Protection agents that a checked bag contained drugs when the flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida landed in St. Croix on Sept. 27, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Virgin Islands said Tuesday.
Agents then placed the luggage on the baggage claim and investigators waited to see who would retrieve it.
Ceestra Burgess, of Irvington, is facing federal drug possession and distribution charges.
The marijuana was in vacuum sealed packages wrapped in Christmas wrapping paper, authorities said.
Burgess later told investigators that she did not know that there was marijuana in the luggage because it had been packed by a friend with whom she traveled to St. Thomas, authorities said in court papers.
