The Cambodian government has officially launched its 10th anti-drug campaign, set to run throughout 2025. This new initiative, endorsed by Prime Minister Hun Manet, calls for collaboration across multiple ministries and institutions to curb illegal drug activities and foster a safer, drug-free society.
The comprehensive eight-page plan, signed by Mr Hun Manet on February 7, outlines six key measures and an implementation framework designed to prevent and eliminate the harmful effects of drug-related crimes. According to the Prime Minister, Cambodia has undertaken nine previous anti-drug campaigns, mobilising national and local authorities, private sectors, and the general public to collectively combat drug-related crimes.
Despite past successes, the government has identified new challenges, including the smuggling of precursor chemicals disguised as agricultural and industrial supplies, evolving trafficking routes, and shifting methods of drug transportation. Recognising the persistent dangers posed by drug-related crimes, the government remains committed to intensifying efforts against illicit drugs through this latest campaign.
The overarching goal of the new campaign is to prevent Cambodia from becoming a target for drug-related offences. The strategy is rooted in the vision of a “Drug-Free Cambodia,” beginning with individuals and families living without drugs and culminating in a nationwide movement under the motto “Together for a Drug-Free Life and Community.”
Key elements of the plan include promoting awareness, increasing law enforcement efforts, and encouraging public participation through mobile applications like NoDrug. The government will enhance anti-drug education through various ministries, including the Ministry of Information, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, Ministry of Tourism, and Ministry of Labour.
The campaign also emphasises stricter law enforcement by empowering local authorities to monitor and address drug-related issues, particularly in high-risk areas such as nightclubs, condominiums, guesthouses, and karaoke venues.
