The psilocybin mushroom shop Shroomyz has been set up at two locations in downtown Sudbury in recent months, and has been repeatedly shut down
Greater Sudbury police have again shut down Shroomyz, a shop which has set up in two locations in downtown Sudbury to sell illegal psilocybin mushrooms.
Although its lifespan has been brief, the ‘magic’ mushroom dispensary has already established a storied history.
In November 2024, Greater Sudbury Police Service reported receiving multiple complaints regarding the unauthorized sale of psilocybin, which is classified as a Schedule 3 controlled substance under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
The sale of psilocybin carries a maximum penalty of ten years imprisonment.
The shop in question, a Shroomyz at 59 Elm St., was shut down that month, and at the time GSPS declined to share any details regarding its closure, including whether any charges were laid.
In a media release issued on Friday, GSPS noted that members of their Drug Enforcement Unit met with the building owner and store employees to “provide education about the legal implications of selling psilocybin,” and that the store shut down voluntarily, with no enforcement action taken.
A few months later, the dispensary reopened a nearly identical shop kitty-corner to the original shop on Elm Street.
In April, GSPS shifted their efforts from educational to enforcement.
On July 2, Drug Enforcement Unit officers supported by the GSPS Emergency Response Unit and Intelligence Unit executed a search warrant on the Shroomyz shop.
Two employees were arrested inside the business and charged with drug-related offences, and subsequently released pending further court appearances.
