USADA has announced on Thursday that 37-year-old athlete Adam Hagerman has accepted a three-month period of ineligibility following an anti-doping rule violation for testing positive for a cannabis metabolite.
The weightlifter from Austin, Texas, returned a positive sample for Carboxy-THC, a urinary metabolite of tetrahydrocannabinol – the main psychoactive constituent of cannabis, marijuana, and hashish. The concentration was above the urinary Decision Limit as a result of a sample collected in-competition at the Virus Weightlifting Series 2 on 31 August 2025.
Cannabis, marijuana, and hashish are classified as Specified Substances under the class of Cannabinoids. They are prohibited in-competition only under the anti-doping rules adopted by the International Weightlifting Federation and USADA, which follow the World Anti-Doping Code.
THC falls under a special category that permits a reduced three-month sanction if the athlete can establish that the substance was used out-of-competition and was unrelated to sport performance. This sanction can be further reduced to a single month if the athlete successfully completes a USADA-approved treatment programme.
