CDU justice ministers from central Germany demand tightening of cannabis law
2025-10-24 | The justice ministers of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia, all CDU-led, issued a joint statement demanding a “timely tightening” of the cannabis law. They argue that partial legalization has not achieved its goals—neither has it curbed the black market nor weakened organized crime.
The ministers call for higher penalties for commercial trade and unauthorized import of cannabis as well as expanded investigative powers. The current law leads to enforcement deficits and hinders law enforcement work. Moreover, child and youth protection must be given greater priority. Critics such as LTO journalist Hasso Suliak commented on X (Twitter) that central Germany apparently has “few other concerns.”
