A few weeks back on my daily trawl of linked in I came across the following post by Ruth.
I had to get in touch to dig a little deeper.
This is the best research I’ve yet come across with regard to cannabis patents.
Ruth Fisher, Ph.D., is a systems design researcher, modeler, and analyst. She analyzes markets to determine how environments shape outcomes. Dr. Fisher has 25 years of experience in the technology and healthcare industries and has worked on behalf of technology companies, early-stage researchers, physicians, and technology start-ups.
Dr. Fisher came to cannabis in 2015 to help her brother figure out how to use medical cannabis to address his MS-induced neuropathic pain. Since she found cannabis, she has become an ardent researcher and advocate for medical cannabis use. As an economist, she’s also fascinated by cannabis technologies and market dynamics – how the industry is evolving in medical and recreational use, and how well the industry is serving market participants.
Dr. Fisher is co-founder of CannDynamics and author of The Medical Cannabis Primer: Ushering in the golden Age of Marijuana and Winning the Hardware-Software Game: Using Game Theory to Optimize the Pace of New Technology Adoption. She holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago.

New blog: Cannabis Patents
I did a very simple keyword search of the US patent database, so the hits surely under-represent all the patents out there.
I downloaded over 10,000 patents, then eliminated those that weren’t relevant and many of those that were either abandoned or had expired.
I was left with over 8,700 patents.
Anyone who thinks there’s been no research on cannabis or no patents on cannabis because it’s Schedule I is mistaken.
Over half the patents are for ligands, that is, natural or synthetic cannabinoids or other substances that act on the ECS
There are substantial patents on cannabis activity all along the supply chain:
Cultivation
Harvesting
️ Processing
Vaping
Smoking
Detecting
Information Processing
Some of my favorite patents:
Microwaveable Frozen Lobster Tail Containing Cannabis and Method of Delivery of Cannabis Compounds
Zein Coated or Impregnated Paper Straws and Related Tublar Article
Tattoo Ink Containing Cannabis or Hemp Derived Cannabinoids or Mixture of Both
Insert storage device: An insert storage device for storing items [cannabis products] inside a generally cylindrical passage such as a [bicycle] handlebar or pole.
