Nuremberg Implements Comprehensive Security Concept at Main Train Station: Cannabis and Alcohol Bans Expanded
2025-12-10 | On Wednesday, 10 December 2025, the Nuremberg City Council adopted a resolution for a comprehensive security concept around the main train station. In a press release, Nuremberg’s Mayor Marcus König stated that public space belongs to everyone and that the city would act consistently if the behavior of one user group effectively excluded others. The concept, intended as a possible “blueprint” for other locations in Nuremberg, was developed in close cooperation between the City of Nuremberg, the Central Franconia Police Headquarters, and the Federal Police Inspectorate Nuremberg, and presented to the Committee for Law, Economic Affairs, and Labor.
The main train station is considered a central transport hub where around 130,000 travelers, residents, and visitors meet daily. Security there is a key concern for the security partners. According to City Legal Director Olaf Kuch, the city understands security in a comprehensive sense, relating both to the objective situation and to citizens’ sense of safety. In the concrete implementation of the concept, the existing alcohol consumption and carrying ban was extended to Aufseßplatz. In addition, a ban on the consumption and carrying of cannabis was introduced in the area around the main train station. The cannabis prohibition zone is intended in particular to curb drug trafficking and to give the police greater scope for action. Mayor König concluded: “We are acting and using the tools we have at our disposal.” Georg Wurth, Managing Director of the German Hemp Association (DHV), stated that the DHV would not challenge this legally, as equal treatment with alcohol meant there was no discrimination against cannabis consumers.
