SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – A former Michigan Department of Corrections officer who worked in prisons will spend time behind bars himself after smuggling drugs to inmates.
Court records show 64-year-old Kernef Jackson pleaded guilty to nine felonies in November, which included three counts of delivering fewer than 50 grams of a narcotic or cocaine.
He was accused of bringing the drugs into the St. Louis Correctional Facility in Gratiot County.
Midland County Circuit Court Judge Stephen Carras handled the case because all Saginaw County judges recused themselves. Jackson is the brother of Saginaw County Circuit Court Judge Darnell Jackson.
The Saginaw County Prosecutor’s Office did not request prison time for Jackson but left the decision up to the judge. Jackson apologized to the judge for his actions.
Carras sentenced Jackson to 300 days in jail with credit for three days already served, which will be deducted from his sentence. Jackson also must serve three years of probation after his release.
