In Oyo State, operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a suspect, Bankole Bari, in connection with the smuggling of a substantial consignment of cannabis into Nigeria from neighbouring Benin Republic.
Bari was apprehended on Tuesday, March 17, at Oke-Oyan in the Ibarapa Local Government Area of Oyo State, after NDLEA officers recovered 71.2 kilogrammes of skunk — a high-grade variant of cannabis — from his possession.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had transported the illicit substance across the border through the Oyan River, exploiting the waterway as a covert entry route to evade detection by security agencies stationed at conventional border crossing points.
The arrest forms part of the NDLEA’s intensified operations targeting drug trafficking networks that utilise riverine corridors and remote border communities to move narcotics into the country from West African neighbours.
The suspect is currently in custody and is being processed for prosecution, as the agency reaffirmed its determination to seal off all smuggling routes and dismantle the supply chains sustaining the illicit drug trade across Nigeria’s borders.
